John Overton Gayden, M.D. Memorial
One of the two founding physicians of MOGA, Dr. John (Jack) Overton Gayden passed away on October 5, 2018. During his career, Dr. Gayden was at the forefront of many technologies and innovations and strived every day to provide a comfortable and patient-friendly environment for women seeking care.
Over the years under his leadership, MOGA expanded to include four locations and twenty-seven providers, establishing offices near labor and delivery unit in the East, North/Bartlett, Germantown, and Southaven markets. He was the driving force of the MOGA practice and because of his leadership, MOGA grew to become the largest women's health provider group in the Mid-South serving as President and Chairman of the Board until his death.
After having delivered thousands of babies during his career, Dr. Gayden retired from practice in 2013 due to health issues.
In his retirement letter to his patients, he left his patients with these thoughts: “My heart is there, but physically, I am unable to practice. In my absence, I have missed and will continue to miss my patients because they have become my best friends. I cherish our years together and the relationships I have established throughout my years of practice. Life is a gift and what you do with it is what you get back and ask for nothing in return."
Outside of the development of MOGA, Dr. Gayden was instrumental in founding The Women’s Health Center, a joint venture diagnostic center for women with Baptist Hospital. His vision to provide patient care where the patient needs it, regardless of their insurance carrier, led to MOGA being one of the first groups to provide OB/GYN services to the Methodist suburban hospitals (North and Germantown). Over the years, he served on numerous hospital committees and as Department Chair(s).
An avid hunter, he was Chairman of the Board of the Tennessee Wildlife Federation and a lifelong member of other gaming and wildlife organizations.
