Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging, or sonography, uses sound waves to create images of the inside of your body.

Using no harmful radiation, such as X-rays, with equipment that typically remains outside your body, sonography is an ideal way to explore conditions inside your body without the impact of surgery.

Pelvic ultrasound for women has two common varieties, abdominal and vaginal, of which vaginal is the most commonly used for gynecologic procedures.

Obstetrical ultrasound is a form of abdominal sonographic imaging primarily intended to monitor the health and development of your fetus during pregnancy.

If you’re experiencing symptoms such as abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, or other menstrual problems, ultrasound may provide valuable diagnostic clues about the origin of the symptoms. Your MOGA caregiver typically uses pelvic ultrasounds to evaluate organs such as your:

• Bladder
• Cervix
• Fallopian tubes
• Ovaries
• Uterus

As with conventional ultrasounds, sound waves serve as the basis for 3D and 4D ultrasounds. Data processing converts the sound waves into three-dimensional still images or three-dimensional videos with the fourth dimension being time.

Used for obstetrical ultrasounds, 3D and 4D ultrasounds provide images or videos of your baby that have a three-dimensional quality. These images can be used both for diagnostic purposes and to provide unique pictures of your baby.

Three-dimensional pelvic ultrasounds, on the other hand, can create ways to evaluate the uterus and ovaries that can’t be imaged directly. Using 3D technology, your MOGA gynecologist can detect:

• Cancer, particularly in cases where there’s abnormal bleeding from the uterus
• Endometrial polyps
• Uterine fibroids
• Uterine scars and other abnormalities

There’s a special ultrasound technique called sonohysterography to aid in the diagnosis of unexplained vaginal bleeding.

Ultrasound imaging using sonohysterography resembles a conventional gynecological exam. The ultrasound transducer is designed for vaginal insertion rather than for the outside of the pelvic area.

Typically, saline solution is injected into your uterus to enhance images of the uterine walls. This presents images of soft tissue that doesn’t usually show up on X-rays or other ultrasounds.

Like other ultrasound imagining, sonohysterography is free of radiation, making it a safe way to explore tissue within your body.

MOGA: Memphis Obstetrics & Gynecological Association, P.C. is pleased to offer 4DHD Live ultrasounds performed by an RDMS-certified sonographer using a GE Voluson E6, a leading gynecological ultrasound machine that delivers high-quality, real-time 4D imaging.

Our 4D ultrasounds are performed in HD (High Definition). The term 4D stands for “four-dimensional,” with time as the fourth dimension. 4D ultrasound is the latest ultrasound technology, taking three-dimensional ultrasound images and adding the element of real time to the process. The result is a real-time, HD live-action recording of your unborn baby.

The 4D ultrasound exam may be limited by the baby’s position and the amount of fluid around the baby. We believe the best images are obtained at 27-29 weeks of pregnancy.

As part of this special experience, you'll get a USB flash drive capturing your 4DHD Live recording and printed pictures of your baby to take home.

The 4D ultrasound experience is offered exclusively at our MOGA Wolfchase location and is considered elective, so we do not file with your insurance.

Before your 4D ultrasound appointment, we recommend that you drink plenty of water and eat a well-balanced meal or snack.
