Vaginal Rejuvenation with ThermiVa

Throughout a woman’s life, childbirth, weight gain, and even hormone fluctuations can impact everything from body shape and bone density to her heart and reproductive health. Because a woman’s sexual, reproductive, and urinary health depends in part on strong muscles and ligaments to support the pelvic floor, she may experience changes to the muscles and surrounding tissue of the vagina as well.

Childbirth can cause stretching of the vaginal canal, leading to a loosening of the vaginal tissue and sagging of the labia majora. Aging and menopause may cause vaginal dryness. Some degree of urinary incontinence is not unusual, either. In fact, most women will experience some degree of vaginal dryness, loss of elasticity, incontinence, and pelvic discomfort over time.

Recent advancements in plastic surgery have given women a way to address some of these issues. For example, labiaplasty is the most commonly performed vaginal rejuvenation procedure, which can increase comfort and improve the aesthetic appearance of the vagina. However, not every woman wants to address these issues with an invasive surgical procedure. Here at Memphis Obstetrics & Gynecological Association, we offer ThermiVa, a non-surgical treatment for vaginal rejuvenation.

What is ThermiVa?

ThermiVa uses advanced radiofrequency heat technology to tone and tighten the tissues in the inner and outer vaginal area. ThermiVa is currently the only treatment technology available that can improve both the external and internal genitalia simultaneously. This innovative option helps women to safely and efficiently improve their feminine wellness, and can successfully relieve a wide range of symptoms caused by urinary and gynecological conditions.

How does ThermiVa work?

ThermiVa uses a slender “S”-shaped handheld probe to deliver controlled thermal radiofrequency energy directly to the targeted areas. This triggers collagen production in the vaginal region, improving the condition of the tissues there. Radiofrequency therapy has been proven to be effective at not only stimulating the tissue in the vaginal region, but enhancing the cellular structure of the skin as well. This increases the overall elasticity and response. Many women report an improved sexual response, lubrication, and tightness.

Because it is non-invasive, there’s no surgery, no downtime and little to no pain associated withThermiVa, patients are able to return to their daily routine immediately, including sexual activity. There are no incisions, stitches, or scarring involved with ThermiVa.

Typically, three sessions lasting an hour or less are done over 4-6 weeks. The treated areas will be tighter almost immediately, and this tightness will continue to improve over the course of a few weeks as the collagen production takes place. Maximum effectiveness is generally reached after three procedures. We recommend patients maintain their initial results with one yearly session of ThermiVa.

Please note that in most cases, insurance will not cover ThermiVa treatment, as it is viewed as an elective procedure.

Who is a good candidate for ThermiVa?

As we discussed briefly above, there are many reasons the condition and health of the vulvovaginal area may be in need of rejuvenation or restoration. Aging and childbirth both affect the tissues in the vaginal area, sometimes leading to a loss of sensation and sexual enjoyment.

The onset of menopause and the accompanying hormonal changes often cause the vaginal tissues to become less firm, elastic, and responsive. Aging and menopause can often lead to sexual problems due to dryness, irritation, and lack of sensation in the tissue. Mild to moderate incontinence is another common complaint, along with a loosening of the inner and outer labia.

Vaginal rejuvenation with ThermiVa can treat a variety of issues, and may be ideal for women experiencing any of the symptoms we’ve mentioned above, as well as:

  • A “loose” feeling after vaginal childbirth
  • Chronic vaginitis
  • An overactive bladder while peri- or post-menopausal
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Chronic vaginal infection
  • Elasticity from aging

No surgery is required, the procedure is mostly painless, and many women will find their quality of life is significantly improved following treatment with ThermiVa.

What are the benefits of ThermiVa treatment?

  • An improved appearance of the genitalia as the labia are tightened and firmed
  • Improved sexual function thanks to a tighter vaginal canal. This can increase sexual sensation, and for many women results in better and more frequent orgasms.
  • An increase in nerve sensitivity for greater sensation and control.
  • An increase in the strength of pelvic floor contractions.
  • Improved vaginal moisture inside and outside, along with softer or thicker vaginal skin. Some women report that they no longer need to use external lubricants.
  • Correction of mild to moderate incontinence or hyperactive bladder.
  • Tightening of the prolapse organs, such as the bladder, uterus, vagina, small bowel and rectum. This can improve pelvic organ prolapse significantly, and may
  • make reconstructive surgery unnecessary.
  • Improved self-confidence and self-esteem.
